UK Passport Photo

Check your photo

Check a practice shot before the photo you take in your online application. We check it as it is and don't crop it.

Use your phone

Send a photo from your phone

Scan with your phone camera. Your photo is encrypted on your phone and only this computer can open it.

Your photo is checked on this device, and we never see it. By choosing one you agree that this page measures the face in it, on your device only. Nothing is kept after you close the tab.

A UK passport photo is either a digital photo for an online application or two printed photos for a paper form. Online, you get a photo code from a booth or shop, or someone takes your photo with your own device during the application, and you don't crop it. Printed photos are 45 mm high by 35 mm wide with the head 29 to 34 mm, taken against a plain cream or light gray background.

GOV.UK doesn't accept photos altered by software or cut down from a larger picture, so we don't sell UK files. Use the free check above on a practice shot: it tells you whether your wall, light and expression meet GOV.UK's published rules before you take the real one.

UK passport photo rules

Check a practice shot before the photo you take in your online application. We check it as it is and don't crop it.

Size
45 x 35 mm printed
Upload limits
at least 600 x 750 px, 50 KB to 10 MB, JPG
Background
Plain and light-colored online; plain cream or light gray for printed photos
Expression
A plain expression with your mouth closed and eyes open.
Glasses
Don't wear glasses unless you have to. If you do, no sunglasses or tinted lenses, and no glare or frames over your eyes.
Babies
Under 1, eyes may be closed. You can support the head with your hand if your hand doesn't show. Lay the baby on a plain light sheet and shoot from above.
Edits
GOV.UK says photos must be unaltered by computer software, and printed photos can't be cut down from a larger picture. So we check your photo and change nothing.
  • Taken in the last month.
  • Online: include your head, shoulders and upper body, and don't crop it: the service crops it for you. Someone else should take it.
  • Printed: 2 identical photos, 45 x 35 mm, head 29 to 34 mm, printed to a professional standard. They can't be cut down from a larger picture.

01

Online application: take it yourself, don't crop

GOV.UK lists two ways to get a digital photo: a photo code from a booth or shop before you apply, or a photo taken on your own device during your passport application. Booth and shop photos are more likely to be approved.

Taking it on your own device

  1. Ask someone to help: you need another person to take it.
  2. Stand in front of a plain light-colored wall with even light on your face.
  3. Include your head, shoulders and upper body. Don't crop the photo: the service crops it for you.
  4. Keep a plain expression with your mouth closed and your eyes open.
  5. Take off glasses unless you have to wear them.

A digital photo must be at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, and from 50 KB to 10 MB. It must have been taken in the last month.

Practice first

Take one practice shot in the same spot and run it through the free check above with UK passport photo selected. If it passes, take the real one the same way inside the application.

02

Paper application: 45 x 35 mm prints

A paper application needs 2 identical photos printed to a professional standard.

The printed photo rules

  1. 45 mm high by 35 mm wide, the standard UK photo booth size.
  2. Head 29 to 34 mm from the crown to the chin.
  3. A close-up of your full head and upper shoulders.
  4. Plain cream or light gray background.
  5. Printed in color on plain white photo paper with no border.
  6. Not cut down from a larger picture, and not altered by software.
  7. Taken in the last month.

Because a printed UK photo can't be cut down from a larger picture, a print made by cropping a phone photo doesn't meet the rule. Use a photo booth or a shop that prints at 45 x 35 mm.

03

Getting a UK passport photo in the USA

US photo shops print 2 x 2 inch photos, which is not the UK size. If you're applying from the US:

  1. Online application: have someone take the photo with your phone during the application. This avoids the print size problem.
  2. Paper form: GOV.UK says to check that a booth outside the UK can print photos 45 mm high by 35 mm wide before you use it.

Don't send a US 2 x 2 photo with a UK form: the size and head height rules are different.

04

Babies and children

GOV.UK relaxes a few rules for young children:

  • Under 1: eyes don't have to be open. You can support the head with your hand if your hand doesn't show. Lay the baby on a plain light-colored sheet and take the photo from above.
  • Under 6: children don't have to look straight at the camera or keep a plain expression.
  • Everyone: the child must be alone in the photo, with no toys or dummies.

More tips for the lying-down setup are on the baby passport photo page.

Troubleshooting

The check says the photo is too small

Online photos must be at least 600 x 750 pixels. Use the phone's main camera at full resolution, not a screenshot.

The background check fails

GOV.UK wants a plain light-colored background. Stand in front of a bare light wall and make sure your shadow falls behind you, out of the frame.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What size is a UK passport photo?

Printed: 45 mm high by 35 mm wide, with the head 29 to 34 mm. Online: at least 600 x 750 pixels and 50 KB to 10 MB.

Can I take my own UK passport photo?

For an online application, yes, but someone else has to take it, during the application, on your device. Paper forms need 2 identical photos printed to a professional standard, for example from a photo booth or shop.

Can I smile in a UK passport photo?

No. GOV.UK asks for a plain expression with your mouth closed. Children under 6 are exempt. More in can you smile in a passport photo.

Can I use a US 2x2 photo for a UK passport?

No. A UK printed photo is 45 x 35 mm, and the head size rules differ.

What is a UK passport photo code?

A code from a photo booth or shop that lets the online application fetch your digital photo. GOV.UK says these photos are more likely to be approved than ones taken on your own device.

Why don't you sell UK photo files?

GOV.UK doesn't accept photos altered by software or printed photos cut down from a larger picture. We won't sell a file that breaks those rules, so for the UK we only check.
